Ombré candles give your home a calm, elegant touch – without much effort. They look great on the dining table, on the living room shelf or as a lovely gift for friends. In just a few simple steps, you can turn plain stick candles into small design pieces that simply look good.

What you need

  • Stick candles (white or light) – you can find beautiful white beeswax candles in our store
  • Wax scraps in your favorite color or white wax + wax crayons made from 100% beeswax (e.g. from Stockmar)
  • A large pot for the water bath
  • Tall, narrow glasses for dipping (preferably ones that you can dispose of afterwards)
  • Something to stir with (wooden stick/spoon)
  • Kitchen paper/liner

How to achieve the ombré look

1. melt wax

  • Melt colored wax in a water bath. Or: Melt white wax and color it with small pieces of beeswax crayons.
  • Pour the liquid wax into tall, narrow glasses. Important: Keep the wax nice and hot and liquid – otherwise the transitions will be uneven and the layer too thick.

2. first dive

  • Dip the candle deeply once, drain briefly and leave to dry.

3. build up the color gradient

  • Do not dip quite as deep the second time. This creates the soft gradient from intense color at the bottom to delicate color at the top.
  • Repeat the dipping process until you like the effect. It is better to use fewer layers – too many will make the candle thicker and the look uneven.

4. vary intensity

  • Want more depth? Prepare a second jar with more heavily colored wax. First the lighter color, then the darker color in spots – this will give you a beautiful, lively gradient.

Ideas for your style

  • Tone-on-tone: beige, sand, caramel – soft, warm and very harmonious.
  • Quiet contrasts: cream or gray with sage green, terracotta or midnight blue – modern but unobtrusive.
  • Sets with rhythm: Dip several candles to different depths – this has a deliberate effect without being too strict.

Decoration tip

Simple candle holders made of glass, ceramic or metal make the color gradient work. A fine vase with a single branch, a few grasses or some gypsophila completes the look – subtle, timeless and suitable for every season.

Safety & sustainability

  • Never leave candles burning unattended, keep away from textiles, place candle holders in a stable position.
  • Collect leftover wax and melt it down again later – this way you can reuse materials.
  • Dispose of the jars after they have cooled down or, if they are easy to clean, reuse them as work jars.
